Sunsets and surprises

She was 62. And she was 58.

The world called them best friends.

They met at their kids’ school annual function. She was wearing a lemon yellow saree. She told her she reminded her on Sunshine.

Sunshine indeed she was.

They met each other every afternoon when school ended.

One day she got her her famous kheer. The next month she gave her a porcelain bowl set. Serve your kheer in this, the note said.

Recipes, grief, gossip, tips to get the stain of the shirt, dreams of their own start-up, they shared it all.

She smiled at her. She returned it. Every afternoon at 2pm, without fail.

They always dreamt of a vacation together. Cosmopolitans and stories, they laughed.

They knew that is all that it what. A dream.

Then, the kids grew up. The husbands grew distant.

They still had each other. They would survive.

‘Remember our dream?’ she clincked her Cosmopolitan with hers, and smiled.

She smiled back and took a sip.

The world called them best friends.
They just smiled.
They were so much more. ❤️
